What you should do if your dog is sick
Adam / Published on December 8, 2013
There’s nothing worse than when your pet is sick.
What do you do?
The last thing you want to do is make it worse so don’t panic first of all!
Take these simple steps.
1. Take away food & water
For two hours, you should remove any food and water from your dog’s reach. After this time, allow your dog to have very small amounts of water but don’t give your pet food for another 10 hours. When your dog stops throwing up, you can feed it but only in small amounts also as to not upset its stomach.
2. Check your dog’s gums
Healthy gums on a dog should be pink, so when your dog gets sick check the gums. If they are yellow, grey, white, or blue, your dog is definitely sick and you should take it to the vet as soon as possible.
3. Dehydration check
Your dog may just be dehydrated. To check if your pet is hydrated, softly pull the skin on the back of its neck up and let go. If the skin seems to stick together, your dog is dehydrated.
4. Monitor closely
Watch your dog closely for any warning signs. If there are any dramatic changes in behaviour, call a vet immediately.
5. Create a safe haven
Find a quiet place in your house and put your dog’s bed there with lots of comfy blankets. Put on some soothing classical music as this has a calming effect.
6. Massage your pet
Massage can help your dog when he is sick. Massage your pet gently around his shoulders, neck and sides of his spine. But never massage the spine directly as this can cause injury.
We hope these tips help you know what to do if and when your dog gets sick.
Hopefully this will prepare you so your pet gets better quicker.
