Choosing paint colours can be confusing and daunting, but understanding the basics can eliminate the need to hire costly interior designers and help turn your home into the perfect haven.

Here you may find all the essential information you need for mixing, matching and arranging colour.

1) Evoke a mood

Yellows and oranges can add warmth and energy to a dark and dingy space. Use blues and greens to create calm and serenity. Reds and purples can add a touch of luxury, drama and romance.

2) Use the colour wheel

Create a dramatic scheme by choosing contrasting colours, found at the opposite sides of the colour wheel. Alternatively, create a harmonising pallet by incorporating colours which sit adjacent to one another.

3) Create space when needed

The use of dark colour can cast shadows, make a room feel more cramped and should be avoided in small, narrow or irregular shaped rooms. Instead, use bright pastels or neutrals to reflect light and make a room feel spacious.

4) Test in natural light

Perception of colour can differ in various styles of lighting. Direct or indirect sunlight, artificial light, differing times of the day and season can all have an effect on how colour is reflected and seen by the naked eye. To be certain of your choice, pick your favourites, and use test pots to brush on your chosen surface to ensure you are making the right decision.

5) Feature Walls

This is a great way to inject colour, interest and excitement into a neutral scheme. Using a bright block of colour can add another dimension to the roomand gives you the ability to match soft furnishings.
