5 Little known Ways to Cope with Stress Better

In today’s modern world, it’s hard to not let stress affect us, with 12 million adults in the UK seeing their doctor for stress-related reasons.
We're working harder and longer hours than ever before so it’s no surprise that we find it hard to unwind.
There are plenty of articles out there telling you how to de-stress, so we thought we’d give you some innovative new ways to deal with stress if none of the normal ways help you.
1. Make Peace
Is there anyone in your life that you’ve fallen out with? Is there a colleague who you’ve got off on the wrong foot with? If there’s anyone in your life where the relationship could be better, make amends. You’ll feel a lot better and like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
2. Get Things out of the Way
We’ve all got responsibilities and things that we don’t like doing or don’t look forward to. Most of the time, it’s natural to procrastinate but this just adds to your stress levels. Commit to doing the most unenjoyable yet important tasks first thing in the morning and you’ll see how much better you feel at the end of each day, leading to better quality sleep and no feelings of dread.
3. Volunteer at an Animal Shelter
Did you know that stroking a pet can reduce your blood pressure? This has a calming effect and releases serotonin also, which is great for stress. If you don’t have a pet to spend some quality time with, volunteer at an animal shelter. You’ll enjoy it because you’re giving back as well as reducing stress!
4. Eat an Orange every Day
Start eating an orange every day. Fit it into your daily routine – either with breakfast or as a snack before bed. Vitamin C clears out cortisol (the main stress hormone) from the body quicker so making sure you get a good amount of vitamin C daily is essential for your wellbeing. If you don’t like oranges, have a kiwi or mango instead. Citrus fruit is the best as they have the highest amount of vitamin C.
5. Bring Lavender into your Life
You may not be into aromatherapy but studies have shown how aromatherapy can be a good way to relieve stress. Lavender in particular hasregularly shown to reduce stress so buy some lavender oil and put a few drops onto your pillow. Or buy a lavender scented cushion to lie on whilst your relaxing on the sofa.
